Hi, friends! It’s time for another installment of “get to know my friends from the internet” — this time we’re talking to Jessica, a friend I haven’t met in real-life yet (but would happily host if she’d ever come to Portland!). We’ll have coffee, and tea, and no berries.
What’s your story (your elevator pitch, if you will)?
I’m originally from Vancouver, but this summer I quit my full-time job in advertising, got married to my longtime boyfriend, and moved to Toronto in search of my dream job in marketing (talk about making a fresh start!). Right now, I’m back working in advertising for the time being, I’m enrolled in a continuing studies program for digital marketing, I run my own blog, and I contribute weekly articles to BargainMoose.ca. Other than that I love to bake, my favourite colour is blue, and I hate berries. All of them.
What made you decide to start a blog?
Since I was young I’ve always been really interested in money management, so when I graduated university and moved out on my own, I just got hooked on reading books and blogs about personal finance and investing for retirement. I’ve always loved writing too so I thought starting my own blog would be the perfect way to show the world my writing and marketing chops at the same time.
What’s your next project?
Well, I’ve actually been working on putting together a multi-author dating/relationship blog. It’s still in the development stages, but it will essentially be a way for people to share their dating/relationship stories and get some unfiltered advice from myself and some other sassy ladies.
Hey! I just launched one too! Let’s connect.
What part of the world do you live in? Do you think that will change?
Right now I live in downtown Toronto, and the plan is to stay here for at least a year or two. After that my husband and I will see where we want to set some permanent roots, but so far I’m loving life on the east coast.
Do you blog full time? If not, what do you do during the work day? Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
I only blog part-time (though when I first started it felt like a full-time gig), and during the day I work in advertising for a national media company. Although I love to blog, I don’t think it will ever be more than a side gig, but who knows. Never say never.
As for being an introvert or extrovert, I’d have to say I fit right in between. I can be a total homebody, but I also like to push myself and go to events, meet new people, and widen my network.
Coffee or tea? What do you put in it?
I love coffee and tea both! For coffee, coffee cream and a spoonful of sugar, and for tea, a tiny bit of milk or cream and some agave nectar or honey.
What would you have as your last meal? Rules of this game: you’re not sick, and you have a super stomach, which will allow you to eat more calories than normal.
Macaroni and cheese, chocolate cake, chocolate milkshake, Fat Burger everything, and a Caesar salad.
Name one thing in real life that drives you crazy.
Slow walkers. I don’t care if you’re not in a rush, walk faster or I’ll literally run around you to get ahead of you!
Name one thing on the internet that drives you crazy.
When people rant about work on their Facebook pages. You’re an idiot and one day you’re gonna get caught by your employer. Have some sense people!
What’s the best (or “best”) pickup line you’ve ever heard or said?
Did it hurt…when you fell from heaven?
Honestly? Like you heard that one in real life, not watching it on the movies?
How did you meet your husband? Tell us your proposal story.
We met on New Year’s Eve at a friend of a friend’s house party. I had met him a few months before that at another party and had an instant crush on him, so when I heard on New Year’s that he was finally single I went in for the kill (or rather made him dance with me and then gave him my number). He proposed the evening of Christmas Day after 5 years of being together and it was just perfect. I’m a very simple girl and would hate fireworks or anything too showy, so him proposing to me after I’d taken my makeup off and had my pajamas on was exactly the way I would have wanted it to go.
Went in for the kill! I LOVE THAT.
What are some of your favorite books? Just the ones that come to mind, they don’t have to be the very best books of all time.
Let’s see, I’m an uber nerd so I would have to say the Harry Potter series, the Hunger Games books, Pride and Prejudice, and Little Women.
I would say that those are NOT super nerdy titles, my dear!
Same with movies. What are some of your favorites?
Oh gosh, having a degree in film I’ve seen a fair few movies. My all-time favourite movie is Goodfellas, after that is the Godfather 1 and 2, and I’ve probably seen Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility a million times.
Who would play you in the movie version of your life?
It’s got to be Katherine Parkinson. She’s a TV actor in the UK, and I’m not joking, she looks almost exactly like me and her character on The IT Crowd is like me with an accent.
Do you have now, or have you ever had, a tattoo? If so, details, please!
Nope. Way too scared of needles.
Where’s your next vacation?
I really want to go to Europe, specifically Italy so I can just eat to my heart’s content. But more realistically I think my next vacation will be to New York since it’s so close.
Please share a joke.
Q: What does one penny say to the other penny?
A: Let’s get together and make some cents.
