What’s your story (your elevator pitch, if you will)?
Well, my name is Cat – short for Catherine – and I’m 26 years old. I’ve been blogging at www.BudgetBlonde.com for over three years now. I absolutely love blogging. I have a huge passion for it, and between writing for my blog and several other websites, I write about 10 posts a week all about saving money, conquering debt, and living life to the fullest. A few years ago, I finished college and grad school. I have a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in 19th Century U.S. History. I was a historian and thought I always would be, but I quit my job and followed my husband out of the country so he could go to med school. Since then, I’ve been working abroad, starting my online business, and in general enjoying this crazy ride that I’m on!
What made you decide to start a blog?
I first started reading blogs in the DIY/thrifting/home improvement niche. I loved reading about women who scoured thrift stores and made their homes beautiful on the cheap. I realized that I had a lot of the same frugal tendencies that they did, and I’ve always loved to write. So, sitting in my bed one day two days before my 23rd birthday, I came up with the name Budget Blonde, made a blog header, wrote my first post about how I decorated my grad school living room for only $200, and the rest is history.
What’s your next project?
I’m always working on a lot of writing projects at once. Right now, my biggest project is that I am writing 5 essays that will be a part of a personal finance encyclopedia coming out next year.
What part of the world do you live in? Do you think that will change?
I live in Grenada, West Indies, and I have for the past two and a half years. In December, I’m moving back home to Louisiana for a few months while my hubs studies for a big board exam, and then we’re off to either New York or New Jersey in April, wherever his university places us for the last two years of med school.
Will I see you at #FinCon13?
I wish!!! I would love to be there! I will raincheck for #FinCon14!
Do you blog full time? If not, what do you do during the work day?
I don’t blog full time yet! I currently work in higher education teaching a writing course to college seniors. However, my big goal is to become a full time blogger starting January 1, 2014.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
I’m a major introvert. The last time I took a personality test, it said I was 80% introverted! It’s a good personality type for a writer. I could literally sit in my apartment happily by myself for about a week straight before feeling the need to get in the car and go somewhere.
Coffee or tea? What do you put in it?
I am a tea girl! I have Lady Grey tea every morning with local Grenadian honey in it!
What would you have as your last meal? Rules of this game: you’re not sick, and you have a super stomach which will allow you to eat more calories than normal.
Oh I would definitely have a big steak with potatoes and a lot of bread. And butter! Yum….
Name one thing in real life that drives you crazy.
I do this thing that I call a “final read through” of every post that I write. After I work on it for an hour or so, edit it a bunch, etc., I take one last read though. It’s a little obsessive, but I have to read it through top to bottom without finding any mistakes for me to be able to send it off. I hate being interrupted during that final read through. It’s always when I’m on the last sentence that I get a phone call or someone asks me a question. Then, I have to go through and read the whole thing again before submitting it. Like you said, crazy!
Name one thing on the internet that drives you crazy.
I see a lot of negative feedback on Facebook. I’ll post something like, “I’m so glad my husband is finished this semester of med school! It was so hard! I’m so happy he’s done!” and people will write, “Just wait until next year! It gets worse!” Or, my friend will write that she is exhausted because she has a newborn, and someone will write, “Enjoy it now! They become teenagers you know!” That stuff really annoys me! I feel like we should be lending a kind word to each other instead of tearing each other down.
What’s the best (or “best”) pickup line you’ve ever heard or said?
Haha all I can really think about are the cheesy ones you hear in movies! I actually met my husband online so there was no big pick up line from him. Ah, the Internet!
You’re a newlywed (right?). Tell us the proposal story.
Well, I don’t know if I’m technically still a newlywed! We’ve been married 3.5 years, which is hard to believe. I really had the most amazing proposal day. My husband proposed in a really pretty park near a historic monument so we could always go back to the location. He then took me to a hotel room where he had bought every single bridal magazine that was out that day, still in the plastic, and put them all over the bed. He had packed my bag for the hotel with new pajamas in it and gave me a card that said “Thanks for saying yes!” with tickets to the ballet. We had dinner, saw the ballet, and enjoyed some champagne and chocolate strawberries that the hotel sent to the room. I’m still asking him if we can have a repeat of that day. It was one of the most memorable days of my life!
You might not technically be a newlywed, but I’m so glad you told us that story. How sweet!
What’s the funniest prank you’ve played on someone?
Haha I like to bring creepy crawlies inside to scare people. The night before I moved to Grenada, I found a huge toad outside and took him inside to scare my mother in law. She was not impressed!
Ha, yeah, that’s kind of gross. :)
What are some of your favorite books? Just the ones that come to mind, they don’t have to be the very best books of all time.
Oh gosh, I am obsessed with chick beach books. I think all the Shopaholic books are hilarious, especially for someone who loves personal finance, haha. I also have a major girl crush on Ivanka Trump. I’ve watched all her interviews and have read her book “The Trump Card” about three times.
Same with movies. What are some of your favorites?
Wow, y’all are going to think I am a huge ditz. Similar to my taste in books, I also really enjoy chick movies. The world is a scary place, so I guess I just love to watch (and read) all about happily ever afters!
Who would play you in the movie version of your life?
I feel like Katherine Hieigl would be able to capture the awkwardness of my life!
Have you ever been in a fight? Did you throw the first punch?
Actually, one day in high school gym class, I was walking out of the girl’s locker room arm in arm with my cousin, and a girl came behind us, grabbed my book bag, threw me into a locker, and started beating up my cousin. I was so shocked! The coach had to come in and break the two of them up. Crazy!
Do you have now, or have you ever had, a tattoo? If so, details, please!
No tattoos! If I ever got one, I think I would get the coordinates of my childhood home, but I don’t have the guts to do it!
Where’s your next vacation?
To Portland to visit you of course!
Do not tease, Cat. Teasing’s not nice.
Please share a joke.
Two tomatoes are running in a race. One jogs ahead, turns around, smashes his friend and says “Ketch Up!”
