The Portland Art Museum is far from a must-see, but if you happen to be in town on the fourth Friday of the month (or you live here and you haven’t been in a while), it’s free!
From 5-8 pm every fourth Friday of the month, the Portland Art Museum decides not to charge admission.
And it’s pretty cool.
It’s not exactly my kind of art, since the permanent collection is filled with Native American and Asian (primarily Japanese) art, as well as pottery and silver. So, I don’t usually go, unless there’s a traveling exhibit that tickles my fancy (which means I probably go once a year, at most). But when I remember (and I should put this on my calendar!) it’s a fun diversion that hardly anyone takes advantage of.
The way to keep it frugal is to arrive on a semi-full stomach, because that part of town is filled with expensive restaurants. Some are overpriced, and some are just fancy, but unless you want to offset the free admission by purchasing a $50 dinner, take my advice and head home afterwards.
