There is a lot of change going on in my life (and no, I’m not referring to the bumper stickers that say, “Not the change you were looking for, was it?” in the Obama font). It seems like that’s how my life goes: periods of smooth sailing and then all kinds of change all at once. Here’s a short list of the change in my world:
- My best friend is getting married on Saturday. Saturday! I made six batches of caramel, I found a party dress, I went tanning, I got my eyebrows waxed, I bought shoes, I taught myself how to walk in heels, and everything is happening on Saturday. It’s going to be a great party, and I’m really looking forward to it. Am I naïve for thinking that things won’t change once she’s married? Is she going to be different? I don’t think so. We’ve been friends for a decade, and nothing will change this. Plus her now fiancé/future husband likes me. So it’s not like he’s going to marry her and then say, “oh, yeah, you can’t hang out with Frugal Portland anymore.”
- My coworker’s wife had a baby.
- The voice of reason got a job in Sacramento. Sacramento! When I found out he was interviewing, my response was, “it’s hot there.” It’s a six-month gig, and it’ll be good for him and his career and oddly, it’ll probably be good for our relationship. He’ll come see me more often, I have the flexibility to work remotely for a week at a time, and I will take advantage of that, now that we’re heading into our slow season at work.
- My baby sister is starting to write more, and she amazes me with her insights. She’s a smart liberal girl, and a Catholic. She writes about what happens when those two sides collide (which does happen rather often).
