I was out to lunch with my sister and parents. My mom had mentioned that she liked that I was growing my hair out.
I replied, “It’s really hard. I want to have long hair NOW. I want to pay off my student loans NOW. I want to do ten pull ups NOW.”
Sometimes ambition is an energy suck. You know? You want to do all these things but you have limited resources and so you do your best and you chip away at each of them (plus it’s totally more frugal to grow your hair out than to keep up a short hair cut) but you feel like the guy from mythology who spends his whole eternity pushing a giant rock up a mountain, never getting anywhere, but always trying. Sisyphus?
But, I know that I am not Sisyphus. I’ll get to the immediate goals soon, and then start
pushing the next rock plugging away at the next set of goals.
And it’s weeks like these that show that change actually can happen. Our area is getting a new minor league baseball team, Oreo has decided to come out in favor of gay marriage, and the Supreme Court decided in favor of rationalism and not sheer politics.
So, patience, grasshoppers. Our goals are sound, and we’ll realize them soon enough. Until then, let’s relax and enjoy the summer. Well, unless you’re in the Northwest, then you can throw your flip flop at your computer because you’re tired of hearing about how people have fun summer activities and you’re forced to camp in the rain.
